IRVINE, Calif.--Local dentist, Dr. Gerald Kushner, helped save the life of Marty Migdall, a friend and patient, by asking three simple questions.
After complaining about his extreme fatigue and falling asleep at embarrassing moments throughout the day, Dr. Kushner asked Migdall these questions:
- Do you snore?
- Have you put on weight?
- Are you tired in the morning and do you have difficulty waking up?
When Migdall answered yes to all three questions, Dr. Kushner referred him to a medical doctor who specializes in sleep disorders.
What Dr. Kushner suspected, and indeed was diagnosed, was that Migdall has a condition known as sleep apnea. Sleep apnea occurs when a person regularly stops breathing for 10 seconds or longer during sleep.
"Dr. Kushner insisted that I make an appointment with a sleep specialist," said Marty Migdall. "I never knew that sleep apnea was so serious."
Conservative estimates are as many as 20 million U.S. adults are affected by sleep apnea, a serious condition with complications that can include hypertension, cardio vascular disease, headaches, and depression. Symptoms can include snoring, daytime sleepiness, restless sleep, nausea, falling asleep while driving, clouded memory, and weight gain.
While most people have heard of sleep apnea, many are unaware that a trained dentist can treat Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA). A dentist is an important team member in the treatment of this condition since the dentist can use oral appliances which are non-invasive and often times more effective and less costly than surgery.
"Dr. Kushner, my dentist, not only saved my heart... he also saved my life," stated Migdall, who was diagnosed and treated for sleep apnea and is now enjoying a full eight hours sleep.
