Dr. Kushner Receives Dental Sleep Medicine Diplomate Status

Irvine, CA - Dr. Gerald Kushner DDS has been awarded Diplomate status by the American Board of Dental Sleep Medicine (ABDSM) on successful completion of the certification requirements and examination. Diplomate status signifies a professional commitment to education, knowledge and experience in dental sleep medicine. There are currently only 130 ABDSM Diplomates nationwide.

Prerequisite qualifications to sit for the examination include having worked with sleep physicians at accredited sleep centers, letters of recommendation from sleep physicians, and numerous patient case presentations.

Dr. Kushner attended the University of Michigan, Wayne State University and is a 1979 graduate of the University of Detroit School of Dentistry. To pursue that goal, he has attended over 3,000 hours of continuing education in neuromuscular, reconstructive, implant, cosmetic, sports and sleep dentistry.

The ABDSM is an independent Board of Examiners that was established in 2004 for duly licensed dentists who treat sleep related breathing disorders. The ABDSM evolved from and replaced the Certification Program of the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine (AADSM) (formerly called the Sleep Disorders Dental Society [SDDS]), which had been established in 1998. They sets standards for the scope of dental sleep medicine, which includes oral appliances and upper airway surgery to treat sleep related breathing disorders such as snoring and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), and assures professional dental and medical colleagues, patients, and the public of an acceptable level of education, training, and experience by those who become Diplomates of the ABDSM by examination. The American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM), the only professional society that is dedicated exclusively to the medical subspecialty of sleep medicine, recognizes the Diplomate status granted by the ABDSM.
