Neuromuscular Dentistry (NMD) is the term applied to techniques that expand upon the traditional mechanical approach to dentistry. It focuses on the status and function of the muscles that control jaw position, chewing and swallowing.

A neuromuscular dentist uses computerized equipment to measure and study the pattern of jaw opening and closing, jaw position and muscle activity to determine if your jaw position (bite) should be left as is or adjusted to a more optimal position.

To understand NMD, you must have basic knowledge of your occlusion – the way that your upper and lower teeth fit together. Your head and neck muscles determine this fit, as they control your jaw posture.

• Computerized Mandibular Scan (CMS) Computerized Mandibular Scan (CMS) –A Medical Device to three-dimensionally assess the precise pattern of jaw movement (open/close) and measure precisely where your lower (bottom) jaw is held in relation to your upper teeth.
