Q. When is dental sleep treatment a better solution for sleep apnea than a CPAP mask?

A. Oral sleep appliances can be administered by a dentist and are very effective in treating simple snoring and mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnea.

Many sleep appliances eliminate the need for surgery, medications and other therapies.

Oral sleep appliances are especially effective for those patients who are unable or unwilling to use CPAP regularly, or prefer to consider all alternatives before undergoing surgery.

Treatment for sleep apnea varies with each patient's diagnosis, and treatment can be as simple as behavior and lifestyle changes. Your doctor may recommend a change in diet or weight loss. A CPAP mask is considered the gold standard of treatment but is used by less than half of patients fitted for it.

According to the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, oral appliances are as effective as the CPAP mask for treating mild and moderate cases of sleep apnea. Oral appliances are the most accepted form of treatment.

Because oral appliances are less invasive and often more successful than surgery, it is recommended that patients considering surgery first evaluate the effect of an oral appliance. The exception is opening of nasal airway and tonsil and adenoid removal in children, in which case surgery is often the best form of treatment.
